With numerous comedy samples and knowingly absurd song titles (‘Cirrhosis For Dinner’ anyone?), it's swiftly apparent that Atoll are a bit daft. It was just as obvious to extreme metal taste - makers Unique Leader Records that the Arizonian five-piece are a particularly destructive and exciting bunch, briskly snatching the band up for the release of ‘Prepuce’ - six tracks and twenty-two minutes of groove-powered puking and snorting that’ll send a jolt of animalistic joy through the heart of those craving the unfiltered buzz of grisly, underground noise.
Sonically calling to mind the fledgling mid-noughties slamming deathcore boom (think Annotations Of An Autopsy, Postmortem Promises etc), there is a thrillingly thuggish, caveman intent surrounding the likes of ‘Knifed In the Butt’ which, as songs about being shanked in the arse go, is as fervently unhinged and rampaging a beast as even the most po-faced of death metal stalwarts could conjure up, keeping the ugly and unpleasant counter wedged firmly in the red
It’s true, for all the bands pissing about there is still no mistaking their objective to absolutely crush you. Closer ‘Gathering Storm’ with its Suffocation meets Korn bounce or the measured, mid-paced blood lust of ‘Molotov Cock Tease’ (the hits keep on coming with these track names eh?) may be the best case in points, yet in reality ‘The Circumcisors’ squealing assault and a flailing, slam-heavy ‘Hitchhiker’ more than keep pace. A tad silly perhaps, but regardless of this, Atoll self-evidently possess all the tools necessary to reduce your skeleton to dust.
