Big things do come in small packages, no, not what you are thinking! This reference is to the new three track EP from Israeli- post metal outfit Nür. This is the bands second EP following on from their first, Light Emerges.
Coming in at just over 13 minutes this passes in a blink of an eye. Obvious comparisons to Nür are Cult of Luna or Neurosis, yet there are also sprinklings of Mastodon esque riffage, most notably on ‘Klala’ which has a riff so thick and sludgy that Kirk Windstein would be proud of.
‘Ein Junes’ is a heavy slow burner with a wonderful guitar lead running through it. Vocally this is as strong a performance as any metal album released this year. That being said, each and every member of Nür brings their A game to the table on this emotionally cathartic EP.
‘The Snake’, sandwiched in the middle of the album is the highlight. The drums sound absolutely colossal and lead from the back, the guitars are solid and bass sludgy. This is a superb piece of musicianship from a band who clearly are on the cusp of great things and deserve to be mixing with the big bands of the genre.
One listen is not enough, once the final note bleeds out on ‘Klala’ you want more, like pringles, ‘once you pop you can’t stop’. As far as EP’s being released in 2021 this one is right up there with some of the best, if not, the best.
The only question that remains is, when will we see a full album?
9/10
