In an oversaturated market with hundreds of new releases every week it can be tough to stand out for anyone, especially a new band looking to make their mark. UK alt-rockers Oversize however have found their niche by offering up alternative shoe gaze style songs that manage to be as catchy as they are technical.
Arriving on the scene with their debut EP in late 2021, the band have continued to build on their sound and are back with another 4 track EP. Whilst not a million miles aware from the debut EP, one thing that stands out almost immediately with these new tracks is the production job. Whilst there is something to be said for fuzz when it comes to this type of music, ‘Into the Ceiling’ sounds bigger allowing the songs to really stretch their legs without compromising on their sound.
The songs themselves show clear influences, not only from alt-rock royalty like the Smashing Pumpkins and Dinosaur Jnr but also from the more experimental end of the 90s Britpop scene and bands such as Lush and Slowdive. Amidst all the ethereal shoe gaze goodness though, there are genuine hooks here which will stick with you for days.
The band have now given us two 4 track EPs which are full of wonderful moments in their own right whilst showing potential. What remains to be seen is whether the band can deliver a consistent full-length album of this quality. If they are able to do so then forget about the ceiling, the sky is the limit for Oversize and you wouldn’t bet against them.
7/10.
