Spirit Adrift can do no wrong, release after release is a joyous bundle of feel good metal wrapped in a blanket of pure euphoria. So, if you were in anyway wondering what the new EP is like, please see previous sentence. This band just seem to have an endless conveyor belt of stonking riffs and vocal melodies that are made for the listener to have a ruddy good time. Their sound is aching to Dio’s Rainbow in the Dark era, melodic guitar passages give way to explosive drum and bass rhythms that are impossible not to nod your head along to.
Their previous LP, 2020’s, Enlightened in Eternity, was a hit in most metal fans end of year lists. The tragic part of this, is the band were unable to get out and tour the thing. Albums from bands like Spirit Adrift, deserve, no, demand the big stage to let loose on. Alas, the pandemic put ends to that.
However, Forge Your Future, will just whet the appetite of fans desperate to see them -and for the band- another three cracking tracks to pick from for future set lists.
The first track ‘Forge Your Future’ has a Boston style vocal melody running throughout it, coupled with hooky guitar leads and a ripping guitar solo. This will be a heart-warming song to see live.
‘Wake Up’ is the stand out track on this EP, driven by a style of riffing and hooky chorus that could make this the 21st century ‘Crazy Train’.
In the every growing list of genres and subgenres in the metal world, Spirit Adrift just play straight up heavy metal, simple rock drum beats and stomping riffs, why complicate things? Simple may seem a harsh description, but it is what it is. Sometimes it’s just perfect for a listener to stick on some tunes that will do as they are intended and not over complicate things.
Nate Garrett’s vocals are on point as ever, the production is that old school vibe of c.20 years ago and adds to the dynamics the record.
All in all, this is a great 20 minute EP that you just cannot, not have fun to. If there is one downside is that it’s too short and too much of a tease waiting for the bands next full length album. In the meantime, while waiting for their next release you should check out their back catalogue, it will not disappoint.
