It is difficult to review this debut album without mentioning Crippled Black Phoenix, given that Venus Principle are largely made up of former CBP members and that there are significant sonic similarities. This album consists of a beautiful amalgam of 1970s psych-prog and melodic gothic metal that more than helps to fill the void following the still painful departure of Anathema. Darker doomy elements hint at latter day Katatonia. Compelling and memorable leads exist over a backdrop of lush synth á la Pink Floyd. The dual harmonised vocals of Daniel Änghede and Daisy Chapman beautifully complement one another and weave in and out of the warm musical canvas. Whilst somewhat lacking the anarchic edginess of Greaves’ CBP, Venus Principle have created a beautifully sweet summers daydream of an album. The hope is that this musical project will go on to make more music in the future and fully emerge from the shadows as their own entity.
